Takis Binis’ voice was the most representative of rebetiko. He was born in Thessaloniki in 1923, where his parents had fled as refugees from Asia Minor.
He began his career at a very young age, playing bouzouki and singing, in 1939 in Thessaloniki. It was there that he met Yiannis Papaioannou and a little later, Vasilis Tsitsanis, who was doing his military service in the telegraphists’ brigade. During the wartime occupation he was arrested for resistance activities – sabotage – and imprisoned in the Pavlos Melas military camp. After suffering terrible torture, he escaped and after wandering about for months, he arrived in the town of Halkida on foot and then boarded a boat for Piraeus in 1944.
He worked for a time in what were then dives of ill repute in the red-light district of Troumba with other great musicians (Yiannis Kyriazis, Fotis Mihalopoulos, Odysseas Petsalis). In Piraeus he became close friends with the great bouzouki virtuoso, Dimitris Stergiou (“Bebis”).
In 1946 he began singing in all of Athens’ famous nightclubs with the great songwriters of the time, such as Yiannis Papaioannou, Markos Vamvakaris, Vasilis Tsitsanis, Bayaderas, Apostolos Hatzichristos, Gerasimos Klouvatos, Babis Bakalis, Yiannis Tatasopoulos, Costas Kaplanis and many others.
